“Krill” is the common term used to describe small crustaceans that resemble miniature shrimp. Despite their tiny size (from 1 cm to 6 cm in length), krill make up the largest animal biomass on the planet and they are an essential building block in the marine food chain. Krill feed on plant matter and occur low in the ocean food chain. Since they are free of many common ocean toxins, such as heavy metals, PCBs and dioxins, that accumulate in larger species of fish, krill are among the purest sources of Omega-3 essential fatty acids on the planet.
Antarctic krill oil experienced a 2.5 times increase in plasma levels of omega fatty acids compared to those taking fish oil.1 This phospholipid form of EPA and DHA, which is significantly more bioavailable, also prevents the fishy aftertaste.
Antarctic krill oil contains the potent antioxidant astaxanthin, which is an esterified form with EPA and DHA. Independent testing has shown that Antarctic krill oil has an ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) value of 378, making it a more powerful antioxidant than Omega-3 fish oils, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Coenzyme Q10 and Lycopene.
